Dr Akeel Alisa was awarded his medical degree from Cambridge University, Girton College. He trained at various leading London hospitals including King's College, University College London and St George's and gained experience in all aspects of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and general medicine. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 1998 and received his MD from UCL in 2012.
He was appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist & general physician at The Royal Free NHS Trust, Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals. He is local lead in alcohol services and endoscopy training. He is faculty member at St George's National Endoscopy Training Centre & United European Gastroenterology (Vienna).
Special interests:
1) Gastroenterology; Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac disease, heartburn & acid reflux, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
2) Upper and lower diagnostic & therapeutic endoscopy; gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, complex polyp removal by endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), stricture dilatation & stent insertion, gastrointestinal bleeding, feeding tubes (PEG/PEJ) and capsule endoscopy.
3) Hepatology; abnormal liver tests, viral hepatitis, alcohol misuse, cirrhosis, fatty liver & non-invasive test for liver scarring (Fibroscan).
He undertook research at the Institute of Hepatology, focusing on cirrhosis & UK first living related liver transplant. He published numerous papers and has been an invited speaker at various national and international meetings as well as after dinner speeches for the George Best charity.
He believes in informed choice and a multidisciplinary approach in treating patients.
