Dr Animesh Singh

MBBS, BSc, MRCP (rheum), FRCP

Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician

Dr Animesh Singh was appointed as a consultant in Rheumatology and Acute & General Medicine at the Royal Free London in 2016.

He aims to offer holistic, evidence-based care to all his patients. He takes pride in treating individual patients and not just their medical problems and runs his clinics in a collaborative fashion with his patients, maintaining great respect for their beliefs and background.

He is proficient in the management of patients with all types of rheumatological disorders with particular interest in psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), osteoporosis, gout, lupus (SLE), adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and vasculitis. In addition, he is heavily involved with acute and general medicine including the assessment and management of acutely sick patients as well as the investigation of complex undifferentiated symptoms. He participates in the medical on call rota at the Royal Free Hospital.

At the Royal Free, he runs a unique collaborative clinic with dermatology consultants concentrating on complex psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patients. He is an educational supervisor for junior doctors, clinical tutor for undergraduate medical students and principal investigator in a number of clinical trials. He advises local commissioning groups and national bodies on the use of biologics in inflammatory diseases.

His undergraduate medical training was at University College London (UCL) where he also undertook an intercalated BSc. in Immunology and was awarded First Class Honours. During his BSc, he undertook a prize-winning Arthritis Research Campaign funded lab project investigating regulatory T cells in rheumatoid arthritis supervised by Prof Mike Ehrenstein at the Windeyer Institute.

His postgraduate medical and rheumatology training has taken place in North and West London at a mixture of extremely busy district-general and world-renowned teaching hospitals giving him extensive exposure to the full breadth of rheumatology and general medicine.

He took a sabbatical from training to work for a multinational pharmaceutical company designing and running global clinical trials in systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) and cytokine-release syndrome in leukaemia patients. The results of the phase 3 systemic sclerosis clinical trial where he was the medical monitor, (FocuSSced study), recently led to FDA and European approval for Tocilizumab in systemic sclerosis.
