Dr Nasirul Ekbal
PHD PGCME MRCP FFICM
Consultant Nephrologist
After graduating with distinction at UCL Medical School in 2001, Dr Ekbal undertook medical rotation in teaching hospitals in London, followed by specialist training in Nephrology in London’s major renal centres. He then commenced higher specialist training in Intensive Care Medicine including general, liver, trauma and neurosurgical intensive care in London.
Dr Ekbal subsequently came to the Royal Free for a post-CCT dialysis fellowship in Nephrology and played a key role in the implementation of a mobile phone application for acute kidney injury (AKI) before taking his role as a Consultant in Nephrology and Intensive Care Medicine. Whilst undergoing specialist training, he gained an MRC fellowship to study a PhD, investigating the effects of mitochondrial fluorescence in shock states and last year also completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education at the Royal College of Physicians (London). He is one of the few specialists in the UK who has dual-certification in Nephrology and Intensive Care and Renal Medicine and therefore has substantive experience of managing acutely unwell/critically ill patients and the in-patient rehabilitation of patients post ICU discharge.
