Mr O’Toole is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
He is co-lead of the world renowned Ear Reconstruction Service which receives and treats patients with congenital and traumatic deformity of the ear. It is the largest such department in Europe for the treatment of microtia in adults and children, and the results of surgical reconstruction are amongst the best in the world.
As regards ear prominence, Mr O’Toole performs up to 200 EarFold and EarStitch procedures per year, as well as earlobe reductions and revision otoplasty procedures.
After training in Oxford and Sydney, Mr O’Toole completed the Royal College of Surgeons Plastic Surgery qualification (FRCS Plast) and was then offered prestigious fellowships in Paris where he spent a total of two years. He is a full member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and a fellow of the European Board of Plastic Surgeons (EBOPRAS). He is on the UK Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery and is a founder member of the International Society of Ear Reconstruction (ISAR).
He was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) for research into the use of gene therapy in surgery and has numerous presentations in the medical literature. He presents at conferences worldwide and lectures frequently to doctors training in plastic surgery.
Mr O’Toole travels frequently to underprivileged communities around the world to operate on patients otherwise unable to afford treatment. In the 1990s he worked as an assistant surgeon in Thailand and Malaysia; this has been followed more recently by visits to the Polynesian Islands and a visit to India. He has visited Cambodia twice recently, in December 2013 and in May 2014.
In December 2012 Mr O’Toole was included in The Times list of international experts, with reference to expertise in plastic surgery of the ear. He has appeared on national television (on Channel 4 and BBC1) on each occasion to chronicle the treatment of patients with congenital ear deformity.
