Professor Joerg-Matthias Pollok

Professor Pollok trained at the University Medical School in Bonn, Germany and St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, Imperial College London and graduated in 1992. He received his MD from the University of Bonn in 1993, his MSc from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 2001 and his PhD from Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary in 2002. He spent 2 years as a Research Fellow at Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School.
He got his surgical training at the University Medical Centre in Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany and qualified as a General Surgeon in 2001, as Visceral Surgeon in 2009, as Specialist Visceral Surgeon in 2012 and became Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow in 2017. He specialized in Hepatobiliary and Transplantation surgery. He is in a consultant equivalent position since 2006 at the University Hospitals in Hamburg and Bonn, Germany and joint the Royal Free London Foundation Trust as consultant HPB and Liver Transplant surgeon in October 2016. Since August 2017 he is the Clinical Lead of the HPB and Liver Transplant Service at the Royal Free. In July 2018 he was promoted Professor of Surgery, University College London.
Professor Pollok’s main clinical interests are in complex liver and biliary tree cancer and benign surgery as well as liver transplantation. He has more than 25 years of experience in this complex field of medicine and worked in renown institutions in Germany, the US and the UK.
Professor Pollok has published extensively, mainly on basic science aspects of tissue engineering as well as clinical studies on liver transplantation.
Professor Pollok in the past has was medals at national and international fencing competitions including the British Student Championships with the Imperial College Fencing Team in 1990.

Clinical interests
Professor Pollok’s main clinical interest is in complex liver and biliary resection and reconstruction surgery. On the other hand he has gained extensive experience and has led clinical programmes of adult and paediatric liver transplantation, including split and life donor transplantation.
Research interests
Professor Pollok’s clinical research interest is mainly in liver transplantation. His experimental research addresses questions around tissue engineering and regenerative medicine with special interest in liver.
