60 seconds with Diogo Da Costa Sousa - Recovery Nurse
Can you briefly introduce your professional background and experience?
I have been a nurse since 2016 and joined Hadley Wood Hospital in 2021. Over the years, I have worked in various wards, gaining extensive experience in different areas of nursing. As a recovery nurse, I ensure smooth and pain-free recoveries for patients post-procedure. I monitor patients' conditions and help them transition from unconscious to conscious states comfortably.
What does a typical day look like for you at the hospital?
As a recovery nurse, my primary duties involve receiving patients post-procedure. I stay with patients to ensure their airways are clear and that they gradually return to a conscious state. My goal is to make this transition as non-traumatic as possible, ensuring they are not frightened and pain-free. I also ensure they rest well and remain in stable condition.
My day starts with a checklist to prepare everything necessary, such as the trolley, access to oxygen cylinders, and other equipment, ensuring patient safety and a smooth recovery experience. On average, I care for 7-8 patients daily.
What do you value most about your role as a dedicated and committed recovery nurse?
Despite the challenges of patientsβ conditions, helping them recover and get discharged in excellent health truly highlighted the rewarding nature of my job. The joy of seeing them leaving the hospital well and grateful was unparalleled and it reinforced my commitment to patient care.
How do you build trust and rapport with your patients?
I build trust and rapport with patients through a smooth approach, starting with greeting them by name and carefully monitoring their condition. I explain what is happening and demonstrate what they need to do. If a patient is awake, I engage them in relatable conversations. If they are in pain, I arrange for appropriate pain management.
What advancements in nursing or healthcare are you most excited about?
At Hadley Wood Hospital, we offer advanced pain management treatments. Pain is a significant concern for patients, and treatments that help reduce it are particularly interesting to me. I'm excited about the advancements in pain management techniques that can significantly improve patient comfort and quality of life.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about Hadley Wood Hospital?
