Ear microsuction is a procedure used to remove build-up of wax and debris from a personโs ear. A special microscope is used, through which the ENT specialist can quickly and safely clean the ear and clear the wax.
Do I need an ear microsuction?
Ear wax is produced by glands in the ear canal and plays an important role in protecting the ear from infections. But if it gets clogged up with debris and forms a blockage (which is very common, especially in people who use cotton-buds which can push wax deeper into the ear canal) then symptoms such as hearing loss, coughing, ringing sounds in the ear and, in some cases, ear pain can occur.
A number of things can cause these symptoms, so itโs always best to get them checked by a consultant. If a build-up of ear wax is causing these problems, removing it and clearing the ear canal is a simple and highly effective treatment.
The procedure
Microsuction is a highly effective form of wax removal. Sometimes prior to your appointment, using softening drops or olive oil is recommended but this isnโt always necessary โ your consultant will be able to advise. During the procedure, the consultant will use a small microscope and low-pressure medical suction device held gently in the ear canal. A very thin pole is fitted to the end of the suction tube, which enables the consultant to clear the wax.
Unlike some other techniques, no liquids are used, making it a cleaner and more comfortable procedure which is very quick and easy to complete. Youโll be able to go home the same day and should notice an immediate improvement in symptoms.
