Chronic or severe hand pain, as well as associated weakness and stiffness, can have a significant impact on quality of life – particularly if it means carrying out daily activities is difficult or impossible.
Treatment
If conservative treatment measures have not helped and the problem is severe, surgery may be recommended.
The specialist orthopaedic surgeons at Hadley Wood Hospital have a wealth of experience in treating a range of hand problems, using the latest minimally invasive and laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques where possible. This can include nerve decompression surgery in the hand or wrist, or repair work for damage to bones, joints or soft tissue (muscles, ligaments and tendons) caused by injuries or osteoarthritis, as well as investigative surgery if scans and other tests have failed to uncover the cause of your symptoms.
Small surgeries can sometimes be carried out with local anaesthetic and sedation, although larger procedures will require general anaesthetic and you may need to stay in hospital overnight. Recovery times can vary depending on the procedure you’ve had, but your surgeon and aftercare team will ensure you have all the advice and information you need.
