Sonata treatment

Sonata treatment is incisionless fibroid treatment alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy. It is intended in treating symptomatic uterine fibroids, including those associated with heavy menstrual bleeding.

Sonata treatment is offered at Hadley Wood Hospital.

Uterine fibroids – these are benign, non-cancerous growths in and around the uterus wall. They are common, but not everyone who develops fibroids has bothersome symptoms. Those who develop symptoms can experience heavy periods, bleeding between periods, pelvic pressure or pain, or difficulty getting pregnant.

Treatments include medications to either treat the symptoms of fibroids or reduce the fibroidsโ€™ size, and surgical treatment, for example, to remove small uterine fibroids. In some extreme cases, the uterus may need to be removed (a procedure known as a hysterectomy).

For women suffering with severe bleeding, a treatment called Sonata treatment may be advised. The Sonata treatment combines ultrasound imaging with radiofrequency energy to gradually reduce the size of these non-cancerous growths in the womb. Known as transcervical fibroid ablation, the procedure does not involve removing the womb, or making any incisions (1) (2).

The procedure

The Sonata Treatment uses a handpiece with a miniature high-resolution ultrasound tip that allows the doctor to see the fibroids from inside the uterus during the procedure, and then treat each fibroid with a process called an โ€œablation.โ€

The Sonata procedure typically takes less than one hour, depending on the number and size of fibroids treated.

On average, women return to normal activity in a couple of days. Most patients see improvement in heavy menstrual bleeding within 3 months.

General anaesthesia is often not required but is an option. Typically, the procedure will take place under local anaesthetic. But every patient has the option to choose what is right for them. Your Consultant will discuss anaesthetic options and determine what is best for you.

Aftercare

After the procedure you will rest for a while and then be ready for discharge. Most patients will have returned home 2 to 3 hours after the procedure. After the Sonata Treatment there may or may not be specific restrictions to physical activities. However we recommend you increase activities at a comfortable pace. Many patients return to normal activities by the next day. It is advisable not to drive for at least 24 hrs but you may bathe or shower as directed by your Consultant and resume a regular diet.
